Moment of a Butterfly - Electronic music, Em 16 - my 44th album. A momentous stylistic and Philosophical step forward - a step change in possibility.
Moment of a Butterfly - Rh 201.
Moment in the sense of a physical quantity, as there are said to be moments of inertia, as a unit measurement of something tangible. Quite wha,t in this analogy, a Moment of a Butterfly could be, I can't say but it would be a linguistic delight, to try and do so. Butterflies have a long history in my Art, in Pictures and poetry, I used to describe the creative process as, being not simply making a silk purse out of a sows ear, as the old maxim forbids, but to make a butterfly out of one, then 'Take' the 'Moment' of it, I presume. I took this piece to Huddersfield University's Music Dept. on a visit to meet then Head of Contemporary music there, Dr James Saunders, which meeting would prove Vastly important to me. Firstly he assured me that 'Moment' was a good piece. Secondly he asked me to partake in the Improvisation group they were holding that day. I was I was allowed to record it and it became the Album, 'Huddersfield Impromptu - Three Undirected Pieces' – which I did direct from the a DrumContinuo. It is a free a download on my Master Grid 'julianbroadhurst.bandcamp.com' for those who were in it or want it. Also from that Seminal meeting would come the 4 disc set 'Assign after the music of Dr James Saunders' - MSEP 19, again from the Master Grid or my MSEP Grid.
Moment and a Butterfly - Rh 202.
Conceptualising on the word 'moment' again, but this time with a temporal implication, a moment in or from time, with the butterfly, captured as is it were, frozen in a moment, like perhaps the frame of a film, and the duration of that frame's exposure, is that said moment.
Distinguished French Composer and Friend, The Great Frederick Kojevnikov said of this album that -
"Julian Broadhurst writes a music which hovers out of time and which altogether sounds like time itself."
British Contemporary Composer Mark Yeats said that it's - "a haunting, slowly drifting musical mobile - a soft sound mass revealing different perspectives as its rotations gently unfold" - 18th October 2015
American Composer Brandan Nelson said "such mesmerizing music...truly put me in another "place - you have a rare gift."
I ware these beautiful words – Gently.
An early reorganization of my music research interests had defined my music into dedicated sets of Albums. This way things of a kin got heard together - as one type of album or another - by Genre - or Tranche as I styled them. In this Case Electronic music, Em. - Music taking a long processing detour from an original acoustic source. By convention Em.
Albums number 28 to 58 form my second big publishing project or Group - the 'New Horizon' - built on the foundational 'Blue Cherry' Group - where I had introduced my 5 areas of research interest, as Blocks of dedicated albums. Now in a new air I felt free to just reel them of as they came. Exploring like a man with a Time machine - where these five Genres, or Tranches, might lead me.
There are 12 Em albums in the New Horizon Group, Em 9 to 20. Em 9 is the Konzertmusic for DME; Em 10 is Dodecal – first and second parts of my Birthday Triptych. Em 11 is ‘Nonosphere’ – “A penetrating Cloud of unbearable sharps, a rush of glass hails into one helplessly caught” – after a fragment from Nono. Em 12, 13 and 14 – ‘Movement about a Point’ – ‘Isospin’ and ‘Directions’ are the three parts of my ‘Circulation Triptych.’ Em 15 ‘Earthfire’ -Contains the Twin works of 'The Philosophical Elements', 'The Fluid Elements - Rh 197 ' [Air and Water] and ‘Earthfire - Rh 198’ [Earth and Fire]. Em 16 ‘Moment of a Butterfly’ - is a momentous stylistic and ‘Philosophical’ step forward - also marking the final change from my old Drum Studio to the new 'Isabel Studio' and a step change in possibility. Em 17 ‘Ritual’ is music sourced from an actual Witches Coven, friends of mine flew in for the event, is coupled with - music microtuning from a filling vessel. Em 18 ‘Change Circle’ is a double album containing 3 pieces - projections turning slowly in a haze of microchanges – my preoccupation at the time. Em 19 and 20 are Fibonacci and Theremi. Fibonacci is a cascade of shredded speech montage brining out the tones and tails of speech into a conceptual music. Em 20 is a performed work for Theremin.
The DCM album numbers list volumes in a [for the most part]
chronological edition - the ‘DCM Broadhurst Edition’ - Prepared for the British Library in 2019. The volumes or albums themselves were actually released as and when it was possible. The Edition though, was planed from the start to stand on the 'foundation Stone' of the Blue Cherry group.
The Rh catalogue, numbers my individual works in order of Completion.
